Soy What?

After doing some research, we've decided to try the wheat-free/dairy-free diet for Mason. Even though there is no science to support the claim that this diet helps with autistic symptoms, there are numerous parent testimonies, and we figure we have nothing to lose by trying. While Mason has not officially been diagnosed with autism, we can see that he isn't like the other three year olds. His quirks aren't classically autistic, but I won't be surprised when told he is somewhere on the spectrum. Today was step one: replace dairy products with soy equivalents. After we have done this completely, we'll do step two: replace wheat products with rice, corn or some other gluten-free grain products. These will be challenging, as milk, cheese, yogurt, crackers and bread comprise a large part of the toddler diet. Fortunately, Whole Foods has a nice selection of soy and gluten-free items, and both are clearly labeled so as to make shopping easier. I felt like one crunchy mama today, loading my cart with items labeled either "vegan" or (a whole list of things)-free. It reminded me of when Lisa Simpson had a crush on the teen environmentalist who said, "I'm a fifth-level vegan...I won't eat anything that casts a shadow."
